The Drums

The Drums

$33.59

The Drums became the buzz band of summer 2009 with the irresistible Summertime! EP, and their self-titled debut album arrived a year later with the song that generated all the commotion. “Let’s Go Surfing” is re-recorded here, boasting major-label polish and softer, more thoughtful verses, but that whistled hook is as irrepressible as ever, and as instantly recognizable as Peter Bjorn and John’s “Young Folks” was a few years earlier. The rest of The Drums makes it even clearer that the band isn’t afraid to be pop with a capital P, and that the Drums know and love every trick in the pop handbook. The album is drenched in glossy reverb and awash in handclaps and harmonies, all of which help unite the band’s fetishes for spindly ‘80s indie guitars, innocent ‘50s melodies, and tinny drum machines and synths. They’ve also got a knack for picking singles: “Forever and Ever Amen” has some bite in its beats, but it’s still a perfect soundtrack to a summertime fling; the ultra post-punky “It Will All End in Tears” is the brisk and heartbroken aftermath. Indeed, the poignancy of summer giving way to fall informs many songs on The Drums, and the bandmembers spend as much time with tears in their eyes as they do going to the beach. They’re skilled at writing lonesome love stories such as “Me and the Moon” and joyous breakup songs like “Book of Stories,” both of which bury their sting with jaunty melodies and synth washes. As immediate as the band’s songs are, their workings are interesting in their own right. The way the Drums juxtapose the heightened emotions of ‘50s and early-‘60s pop with the often-jaded moods of post-punk and indie is fascinating, with “Down by the Water”’s slow dance haze sharing space with “Best Friend”’s impatient yelps. The way their riffs borrow equally from Buddy Holly and the Smiths shows that the jangly simplicity of those styles isn’t so far removed after all. Even when the band’s songwriting falters — “I Need Fun in My Life” and “I’ll Never Drop My Sword” are a touch too simple and repetitive compared to what came before — The Drums’ sound is still distinctive, and even if the album feels a little calculated at times, it’s still greater than the sum of its parts. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi Performers: Adam Kessler – Guitar; Connor Hanwick – Drums; Graham Jacob – Guitar; Johnny Pierce – Vocals

Pipes & Drums from Celtic Brittany

Pipes & Drums from Celtic Brittany

$11.98

Arc’s Pipes & Drums from Celtic Brittany features 14 tracks that dutifully illustrate the Celtic influence found in France’s northwest. Like traditional Scottish pipe and drum bands, Bagad du Moulin Vert rely on a small army of pipers and drummers, but they include vocalists and a small army of oboe players as well, giving each track a sense of place that melds Eastern and Western European traditions with both drama and whimsy. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi Performers: Alain Moreau – Djembe; Cathy Hénaff – Bagpipes; Jean-Claude Normant – Darbouka; Liones Thomassin – Bagpipes; Pierre-Yves Pétillon – Bagpipes; Ronan Even – Bagpipes; Stéphane Riou – Bagpipes, Oboe; Yannig Menguy – Bagpipes; Yves Salvy – Bagpipes; Fabien Page – Oboe; Frédérique Moal – Oboe; Goulven Hénaff – Oboe; Gwendal Fontaine – Oboe; Hubert Poder – Oboe; Kristof Playon – Oboe; Marine Plouzennec – Oboe; Mona Ropars – Oboe; Patrick Plouzennec – Oboe; Sandrine Job – Oboe; Sylvaine Thomassin – Oboe; Yann Vari Robin – Oboe; Alan Pierre – Vocals; Arzel Plouzennec – Drums;

Latinpercussion LP720X40 40th Anniversary Djembe

$389

Latinpercussion LP720X40 40th Anniversary Djembe Latinpercussion LP720X40 40th Anniversary Djembe Description: The LP 40th Anniversary Djembe is made from kiln dried Siam oak. To reflect our multi-decade pedigree, we finished each limited edition drum in a lavish red fade that matches our popular 40th Anniversary Congas and Bongos. Then, using a proprietary inlay process, we inscribed each djembe shell with our custom designed 40th Anniversary logo-sealed into the wood and protected for the ages with a rock hard gloss topcoat. Heads are specially selected goatskin in 12 1/2″ diameter. Again, each carries the 40th Anniversary logo imprint. The drums are fully tunable via conga-style wrench. “Heart” style side plates are gold plated to match the rims-special Gold Tone Comfort Curve® II models that reduce hand fatigue. Of course, while we set out to create the ultimate in aesthetics, our goal was always superior tone. This time it is beyond reproach! The LP 40th Anniversary Djembe delivers crackling highs, undulating mids, and robust, resonant lows. The drums are light enough to be played standing with strap, or they can be played sitting. In addition, they may be mounted with congas and provide the perfect adjunct to any percussion set up. A tuning wrench and LP Lug Lube is included with each LP 40th Anniversary Djembe. Japanese Drums

The term “taiko drum” included in ads for the various virtuoso Japanese drumming ensembles that have found success touring in the U.S. is something of a misnomer, for the word taiko simply means drum in Japanese. Taiko refers to ensemble drum music of various kinds, not to music for a specific type of drum. This disc, by a top-flight Japanese high school taiko group, serves to introduce the Western listener to something of the flavor of the music in Japan, the substructure that underlies the international touring groups. The music consists of traditional pieces, mostly depicting specific activities or scenes. The late West African drummer Babatunde Olatunji once said that there’s a rhythm for everything, and listening to this disc it’s easy to agree. A slight hint from an instrument added to the ensemble is enough to conjure up a range of images evoked by the music. Sample Kaikyo (Sea Sounds), track 7, with its spare use of a shell horn; the shifting drum patterns evoke patterns of waves. The booklet, translated from Japanese (text appears here in English and German) explains the significance of each piece and gives an idea of the contexts in which taiko music is played in Japan. A nice change of pace for anyone who has bought a ticket to hear the Kodo drummers over the past few years. ~ James Manheim, Rovi Performers: Akane Makino – Taiko Drums; Akemi Okazaki – Taiko Drums; Ayaka Senga – Taiko Drums; Ayaka Suzuki – Taiko Drums; Ayumi Goto – Taiko Drums; Chie Ito – Shinobue; Chieko Morita – Taiko Drums; Eriko Takaya – Shinobue; Hirotaka Koizumi – Taiko Drums; Hitomi Umehara – Taiko Drums; Keiko Ebina – Taiko Drums; Maho Miyazawa – Taiko Drums; Maki Yamamoto – Taiko Drums; Mami Furui – Taiko Drums; Mika Suzuki – Taiko Drums;

Drums Unlimited

Drums Unlimited

$12.79

Other than a trio set with the legendary pianist Hasaan Ibn Ali, this set was Max Roach’s only recording as a leader during 1963-67. Three of the six numbers (“Nommo,” “St. Louis Blues” and “In the Red”) find Roach heading a group that includes trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, altoist James Spaulding, pianist Ronnie Mathews, bassist Jymie Merritt and, on “St. Louis Blues,” Roland Alexander on soprano. Their music is essentially advanced hard-bop with a generous amount of space taken up by Roach’s drum solos. The other three selections (“The Drum Also Waltzes,” “Drums Unlimited” and “For Big Sid”) are unaccompanied features for Max Roach and because of the melodic and logically-planned nature of his improvisations, they continually hold on to one’s attention. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi Performers: Freddie Hubbard – Trumpet; James Spaulding – Sax (Alto); Jymie Merritt – Bass; Max Roach – Drums; Roland Alexander – Sax (Soprano); Ronnie Mathews – Piano

Tabla, djembe, taiko, and dajere are among the featured instruments on this disc, with locales within Africa and the Middle East providing the majority of the backdrop. This is a quality disc that manages to be as listenable as it is educational, and its usefulness as a sampling source should not be overlooked. ~ J. Scott McClintock, Rovi

Tantra Drums

Tantra Drums

$12.78

Al Gromer Khan (aka Aloysius Gromer) earned the right to use the name “Khan” by demonstrating master proficiency on the sitar. Tantra Drums is a set of ethnic electro-tribal ambience based on the ritualism of an ancient Shakti cult. Tantra contains dark and exotic rituals and deep spirituality. Modern culture has bastardized the term, so Khan has composed, arranged, and performed these soundscapes in modern poetic parlance in order to preserve both the erotic and spiritual meanings. The music is deep and hot. Khan’s atmospheres surround the rhythms; his sitar compliments the atmospheres. The ethnic overtones complete his soundworld. Deep listening is a must for this lush and full soundscape. The CD will appeal to fans of Mo Boma, David Parsons, and Omar Faruk Tekbilek. Fans of Middle Eastern and Far Eastern ambient fusion will find this important. Casual fans will find it interesting. ~ Jim Brenholts, Rovi Performers: Talvin Singh – Loops; Al Gromer Khan – Surbahar, Sitar, Keyboards; Amelia Cuni – Vocals; Saam Schlamminger – Drums

Drums of Death

Drums of Death

$13.58

Drums of Death is a collaboration between the relentlessly experimental hip-hop of DJ Spooky and drummer Dave Lombardo of Slayer and Fantômas fame. Is this another experiment in metal/hip-hop fusion? Yes, and no. And as such, it works better than most. Lombardo is a heavy metal drummer without peer. His big kit work — especially his on-the-edge cymbal work and furious tom-tom workouts — lends a weight and urgency to Drums of Death that anchors it and pushes it further than the inept nu-metal chart acts that shall remain nameless here. Excess is something Spooky has never been afraid of. His records are full of it. Sure, when it doesn’t work, it can be tiresome, but when it does, there is no one more utterly engaging. Spooky refuses to be reined in by what musical genres are “supposed” to sound like. Also on board for the project are Meat Beat Manifesto’s Jack Dangers, Public Enemy’s Chuck D (who raps on three radical remakes of tunes from his crew), and former Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid (who appears on about a third of the album’s 16 tracks). The science fiction theme on the cover art of Drums of Death is not inconsistent with the suffocatingly paranoid, chaotic futurism that the album offers aurally. The Public Enemy tunes — “Brother’s Gonna Work It Out,” “B-Side Wins Again,” and “Public Enemy #1″ — work surprisingly well. Dangers’ guitar work on “B-Side” is a fine counterweight to D’s aggressive delivery, but it is Lombardo whose skittering and punched-up skin throb pushes the thing into the red. Spooky cuts up the breakbeats and an array of sonic washes give the track a new sense of currency. Rapper Dälek guests on “Assisted Suicide,” and offers a nocturnal anarcho-political take on hip-hop culture as it collapses in on itself. Reid’s freakout guitar drones interlaced with Spooky’s loose and loopy turntablism threaded through Lombardo’s chopped and spindled breakbeats are the entryway into something entirely new. It’s been hinted at before by groups such as King Crimson and Buckethead with Les Claypool, but never with this kind of raw power thud. Reid’s power chords and Dangers’ bass pulse team wonderfully on “Metatron,” as Spooky’s alterna-beats and sound effects skew to dubwise extremes that Lombardo is only too happy to indulge with some mind-bending breaks. Drums of Death is far from easy listening, but it is compelling throughout — never dull, never boring, never rote. It points to a ton of new possibilities in the way hip-hop, electronica, and heavy metal approach and engage with one another, without becoming mired in any of them. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi Performers: Jack Dangers – Arp 2600, Multi Instruments, Guitar (Electric), Bass, Guitar (Bass); Chuck D – Rap, Vocals; Dälek – Vocals;

Drummer/percussionist Todd Isler conceives his modern jazz music as surrounding his playing without being its focus. In many ways a functional, non-melodic timekeeper, Isler is more a colorist and co-operative spirit among his friends and chosen bandmates. He’s a good, steady drummer, technically sound but unspectacular. At times you hear a rock or rhythm & blues influence, and in many instances, ethnic musics. This third recording as a leader is made with the help of three different saxophonists on select tracks — the accomplished Billy Drewes, lesser-known Allen Won, and his significant other and co-composer Jenny Hill. Of the ensemble tracks, Drewes is potent on tenor for the neo-bopper “Tiptoe,” and energized on soprano sax for the rock influenced, Brazilian tinged jam “Baiao Todd.” Won’s tenor provides a deeper edginess, especially during the serious 6/8 track “Kyerematan,” but goes towards a Michael Brecker neo-bop type stance on “Kalalau Trail.” Hill is on one cut, the nice and easy “Olinda.” The program alternates on every other selection from combo to solo drum or percussion shorties by Isler, playing frame drum, shakers, or exotic instruments, drum kit, or multiples. The most exciting and focused solo is “Hadgini Journey,” but the every-other approach does not lend a lot of cohesion to the date. The finale, the Weather Report/Joe Zawinul evergreen “Badia” has Isler with the steely, echoed, electric guitar of David Phelps, and it is thin in concept and execution. There’s a better, funky take, with Drewes on soprano, of Stevie Wonder’s obscurity “Bird of Beauty.” Isler has a concept that is on the verge of full realization, and time will tell how firm that direction holds over his clear influences. ~ Michael G. Nastos, Rovi Performers: Kip Reed – Bass (Electric); Allen Won – Sax (Tenor); Billy Drewes – Sax (Tenor), Sax (Soprano); Ian James MacDonald – Piano; Todd Isler – Hand Drums, Vocals, Drums, Percussion

A talented student of Keiko Abe and an acclaimed soloist with the Kroumata Percussion Ensemble, Mika Takehara makes an impressive debut on BIS with this 2004 recital of six virtuosic works for solo marimba and other percussion. The four marimba offerings — Yasuo Sueyoshi’s wildly gestural Mirage, Akira Miyoshi’s effusive Ripple, Toshi Ichiyanagi’s moody Portrait of Forest, and Minoru Miki’s discursive Time — are unlikely to impress in terms of their musical content, but they are challenging enough to show Takehara’s skills to best advantage, and allow her to display her full range of techniques and expressions on the instrument. The two works for various unpitched percussion — Maki Ishii’s obsessively driven Thirteen Drums, and Hideki Kozakura’s poetically atmospheric Johali — offer music of greater excitement, more varied textures and more exotic colors, and may serve as aural respites if the marimba’s limited timbres induce ear fatigue. Yet even if there are no masterpieces on this disc, Takehara has at least chosen works that suit her abilities and has delivered performances that will convince the listener of her staying power. BIS provides excellent sound quality, and Takehara’s presence is almost palpable. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi Performers: Mika Takehara – Percussion, Marimba
