Axis of Eden

Axis of Eden

$11.98

Are they a doom, sludge, or noise metal band? That is a question that has been foisted upon Today Is the Day for much of their career thus far. However, as evidenced by their 2007 release, Axis of Eden (and first for the Supernova label), the group — which has long been led by singer, guitarist, songwriter, and producer, Steve Austin — the group is getting increasingly more melodic. But rest assured longtime fans, there is still plenty of noise and molasses-murky riffage to go around. Things kick off with the sluggish and Sabbath-y “Free at Last,” which is a sonic approach that appears throughout the album, as evidenced by such other standouts as the powerful Kyuss-like “Circus Maximus.” But if it’s noise you want, it’s noise you still get from Today Is the Day — especially on “If You Want Peace Prepare for War” (which halfway through, transforms into a nifty Beatles-esque middle eastern tune) and the mysteriously-titled “Black Steyr Aug,” among others. Unlike the majority of doom metal bands that are sonically one-dimensional, Today Is the Day are not afraid to go off exploring, as evidenced by Axis of Eden. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi Performers: Chris Debari – Guitar (Bass); Derek Roddy – Percussion, Drums; Steve Austin – Strings, Vocals (Background), Keyboards, Piano, Guitar

Paramount among several excellent albums by Wadada Leo Smith that appeared during the first years of the 21st century on John Zorn’s Tzadik label, Luminous Axis — The Caravans of Winter and Summer is described by the artist as “An Electronic Sonic Garden of Delights and Transformations, Events 1-15.” Smith’s trumpet is heard at its most intimate and inspired, with percussionist William Winant and a team of technically adept improvisers (John Bischoff, Chris Brown, Ikue Mori, Tim Perkis, and Mark Trayle) who handle what are described as computer-driven electronics. The effect is pleasantly unpredictable and at times delightfully disorienting. Wadada Leo Smith is a master of improvisation who balances sound and silence with a combination of theatrical freedom and ritualistic discipline that can be breathtaking. It is certainly one of this artist’s all-time best efforts, similar in many ways to some of Anthony Braxton’s collaborations with Richard Teitelbaum. The electronic element can and does appeal to 21st century ears, hearts, and minds. ~ arwulf arwulf, Rovi Performers: Ikue Mori – Electronics; John Bischoff – Electronics; Mark Trayle – Electronics; Tim Perkis – Electronics; Wadada Leo Smith – Flugelhorn, Trumpet; William Winant – Tympani [Timpani], Gong, Cymbals, Drums (Bass), Bells, Percussion

Axis Vortex Stands

Axis Vortex Stands

$82.99

Vortex Stands Description Axis Percussion has done it again. This time the Axis Percussion name is bringing new innovations to drum hardware that are unlike anything else in the industry with the addition of the NEW VORTEX Snare Drum Stand, and the new and improved VORTEX Performance and Precision HiHats. The new “VORTEX” line of professional hardware is made for those drummers who are looking for a lightweight flexible solution for their setup and performance needs. All parts are machined of structural grade aircraft aluminum and steel for strength, stability and a great reduction in weight. High quality grade ’8′ fasteners are stronger and more seviceable than current industry standard rivets. The shape and design of the leg assembly is not just for looks. The “cyclone” or “vortex” shape has a key advantage over the typical hardware design that is being produced by most of today’s drum manufacturers. As the normal load forces (i.e. impact shock during playing) are applied, the stand absorbs the shock by coiling or twisting about its center axis. This “spring like” rotation gives the stand the appearance of twisting into the ground, creating added stability as opposed to the bouncing that occurs with traditional rigid braced legs. The twin cylindrical rubber feet on the end of each leg offers an increase in the floor contact area of the legs and reduces creeping.
